Guiding people managers to better mental health support

Overview

As the 3rd largest non-state owned bank in the world and with a huge employee base, this client realised they needed to educate their people managers on mental health, in order create a more ‘aware’ culture, generate helpful conversations and alleviate stigma. We brought an immersive storytelling approach to help improve their situation.

The challenge

Mental health is firmly on the agenda for this client and they wanted to educate their People Managers on this topic. There are about 40,000 People Managers, located all over the world, and this global audience is hugely diverse.

Colleagues’ understanding of mental health differs greatly, depending on factors such as their own experiences, culture and environment. What they do have in common is that mental health is just one of many things they have to consider in their role as a manager of people.

The solution

Insight

We discovered that motivation was not a problem at this organisation – people managers very much wanted to be there and help their team members when it came to mental health matters. However, the concern that they didn’t have the skills to do so – capability, not motivation or opportunity, was the issue.

With that in mind, we decided it was important to guide and support people managers through an experience that resonates with them so that it:

  • Showed them how to start talking about mental health matters with their team members
  • Showed them how to break down any stigma around mental health
  • Showed them how to keep learning about mental health (e.g. nominating themselves for the instructor-led training that would follow).

Interventions

To do this, we created an interactive experience featuring video stories – both fictional and non-fictional - to help demystify situations and to start building an emotional connection.

Users also needed to make decisions as they worked through the stories to help them build confidence.

Information, theory and examples were interweaved throughout with a rich variety of animation, imagery, infographics, and diagrams used to present explanations.

A warm, down-to-earth tone of voice was deployed throughout with a core focus on self-reflection and building confidence.

Impact

Nearly two thirds of our client’s people managers have reported having the confidence now to have mental health conversations with people in their teams.
